Aliasing is what happens when sampling goes wrong.

Here we are sampling the red waveform at about 150% of its frequency. The reconstructed waveform (blue) looks obviously wrong. Notice however that the reconstructed waveform is at a new frequency (an alias) which has been sampled correctly.
