This session will present Ham Radio/Amateur Radio in a context that is relevant to Linux users. Attendees will be given an introduction to the hobby, its origin, major milestones and an overview of current areas of endeavour. A quick tour of Linux/Open Source software of relevance to ham radio will be provided.

Facilities permitting a number of practical demonstrations will be provided. These will include examples of how people interested in Ham Radio but who don't have a license can monitor signals from Amateur Satellites, local packet radio networks and similar.

The main direction of discussion will be helping non-hams understand the hobby rather than hams understanding Linux though both should get something from the presentation.
